Families in Leduc can now register their children for inclusive summer day camps designed for young people with disabilities. AdaptAbilities, a non-profit organization, opened registration to all new families on April 1, 2026, for their Hearts in Action program.
The summer camps aim to help participants build confidence, make new friends, and foster a sense of belonging. The programs cater to individuals with various needs, including autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, and other visible or invisible disabilities. Programming is available for a wide age range, starting from children as young as three years old through to young adults aged 23 and older.
In Leduc, the camps operate out of the Leduc Recreation Centre. The program format typically runs from early July through late August, offering a variety of recreational activities and field trips. This is the third year the organization has offered these services in the community, following their successful introduction in 2024.
For families managing the costs of these programs, the charity offers a bursary fund. This financial assistance acts as bridge funding for families who are currently waiting for or qualify for provincial support services. Those interested in learning more about available dates, locations, or the registration process can find full details on the AdaptAbilities website.
Founded in 2004 by adaptive physical education teacher Michelle Hordal, the organization was created to address identified gaps in disability and family support systems. The charity continues to expand its reach across the region, most recently opening a new branch in St. Albert in December 2025.
