Mayor Blaine Hyggen says new provincial funding for healthcare and roads will benefit residents in Lethbridge, Alberta, following the release of the 2026 provincial budget. On February 27, 2026, the mayor highlighted several multi-million dollar projects aimed at improving local services despite a projected $9.4 billion deficit for the province.
A major part of the funding includes $59 million over the next three years to build a heart procedure room, known as a catheterization laboratory, and expand intensive care units. This money will be shared between the City of Lethbridge’s Chinook Regional Hospital and the regional hospital in Medicine Hat.
The budget also provides $35 million for a medical teaching school at the University of Lethbridge to help train more doctors for rural areas. Additionally, the province committed $152 million over three years to turn a 36-kilometre section of Highway 3 into a four-lane divided road between Seven Persons and Medicine Hat.
While the province plans to spend $7.1 billion on local infrastructure across Alberta, the city’s financial experts are still studying how the overall budget will affect daily operations. Mayor Hyggen noted that while these large building projects are positive, the city must still determine how provincial decisions will impact local service levels and upcoming council spending plans.
