Starting February 26, 2026, the City of Lethbridge is adding alternating left-turn arrows at the intersection of 13 Street North and 9 Avenue North in Lethbridge, Alberta. This new feature aims to make left turns smoother and improve the flow of traffic for residents and local businesses during busy times.

The alternating system works by giving a protected flashing green arrow to only one direction during a single light cycle. Northbound traffic will receive the turn signal first, followed by southbound traffic in the next cycle.

The new turn signals are set to run from 7:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. Outside of these hours, the intersection will return to its usual light patterns.

This is the second time this type of system has been used in the area after a similar setup was installed at 5 Avenue North in March 2025. 13 Street North serves as a main path for people heading to downtown, the regional hospital, and Highway 3.

By providing a clear window for turns, the city hopes to reduce the risk of crashes and shorten wait times for drivers. The project is part of an ongoing plan to improve busy intersections using existing infrastructure.
