Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) lifted the Yellow Cold Warning for the North Bay–Powassan–Mattawa region on Jan. 26, 2026, as the most dangerous freezing temperatures began to move out of the area. While the immediate threat from life‑threatening cold has eased, the town of Mattawa faces a transition to light snow and gusty winds that raise travel and outdoor-safety concerns.

ECCC forecasts for the Mattawa area show winds gusting to about 40 km/h, which can blow snow across roads and reduce visibility. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Region and other winter‑safety sources are advising drivers to clear snow from windows, mirrors and lights before travelling, particularly on Highway 17. Residents should also check Ontario 511 for road closures or delays before setting out.

Although the Yellow Cold Warning has ended, ECCC forecasts indicate wind chill values tonight around −24°C to −27°C. Under ECCC’s colour‑coded system, a Yellow alert signals hazardous weather that may cause disruptions or health impacts; people are still advised to dress in warm layers and limit time outdoors.

The North Bay–Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) urges residents to stay off river ice on the Mattawa and Ottawa rivers, noting that fresh snow can hide cracks and that moving water under the surface makes ice thickness unpredictable even after an extended cold spell. Local road crews continue winter operations under Ontario’s Minimum Maintenance Standards (Ontario Regulation 239/02) to keep emergency routes and main hills clear for the community.
