Teams from the Milton Minor Hockey Association (MMHA) in Milton, Ontario, are preparing for a major travel weekend from January 15 to 18, 2026, as dozens of local squads head out of town for regional and international tournaments. This wave of competition involves players of almost all ages, ranging from under-10 house-league teams to U16 and U18 rep squads branded as the Milton Jr. Menace, and to U21 teams in the club’s rep structure.

The weekend is centered around three high-profile events in the region, though not all divisions play on the same weekend. Many Milton teams will compete in the Oakville Winter Classic (Jan. 15–18, 2026) at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, while others hope to qualify for the International Silver Stick Finals — Newmarket’s Finals are scheduled Jan. 15–18, 2026. (Some Silver Stick Finals are held on different dates; for example, the Sarnia Girls Silver Stick International Final is listed for Jan. 1–4, 2026.) Because the Silver Stick is an international event, teams generally must win regional Silver Stick tournaments in late 2025 or receive an invitation to secure a spot in the international Finals.

The association scheduled these dates well in advance to help families manage the costs and logistics of hotel stays and travel. MMHA’s 2025–26 season framework was populated more than a year ahead (roughly 14–18 months), giving many local families extra time to plan; the club also manages a multi‑thousand‑player membership, so the travel weekend affects a large portion of the community.

Residents who stay behind in Milton may notice a change at local rinks such as the Milton Sports Centre and Sherwood Community Centre. With so many teams out of town at once, there is typically a significant increase in available ice time — the town has in the past used freed-up slots for extra public skating sessions or to help other local sports groups catch up on their schedules.
