On February 26, 2026, the Halton Region raised the flag of Ghana at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville to welcome a visiting delegation to the region. The event marks an international partnership focused on helping more women take on leadership roles in local government and improving public services for all residents.

Regional Chair Gary Carr and the local council held a special workshop on the morning of February 26, 2026, to discuss common challenges like managing waste and water systems. These sessions allow local officials to share expertise with international partners to solve everyday community issues.

The visit is part of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Partnerships for Municipal Innovation – Women in Local Leadership (PMI-WILL) program. This six-year project is funded by the federal government through Global Affairs Canada and works to help women lead while improving service delivery to community members.

Milton Regional Councillor Sameera Ali has played a major role in the program and has previously travelled to Ghana and Sri Lanka to share municipal knowledge. This ongoing exchange helps local governments work together on building inclusive policies that benefit citizens at home and abroad.
