Families and residents in Miramichi, New Brunswick, face higher electricity bills if NB Power’s application for a 4.75-per-cent rate increase is approved. NB Power has asked the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board (NBEUB) to approve the across‑the‑board hike, proposed to take effect April 1, 2026, as part of its 2026/27 General Rate Application (Matter EL‑003‑2025).

If the plan is approved, the average household in Miramichi would see its annual power bill rise by about $130 — an estimate based on NB Power’s typical residential usage assumption of roughly 1,350 kWh per month. Local community groups have organized a demonstration for January 31, 2026, to protest the rising costs and demand more support for low‑income customers.

There are programs and payment options designed to help eligible households. The Enhanced Energy Savings Program helps homeowners with a combined gross household income under $70,000 access free targeted upgrades — such as insulation and mini‑split heat pumps — (eligibility requires documentation such as a Notice of Assessment). Residents can also contact NB Power to ask about equalized billing or other payment arrangements to manage winter heating costs.
