The Municipality of Mississippi Mills, Ont., is hosting a free public skating session on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the John Levi Community Centre (many residents still know the facility as the Almonte Arena). The municipality announced the pop-up session on its official Facebook page on Jan. 7 after regional school closures due to a snow day. The session is organized by the Municipality of Mississippi Mills Parks and Recreation Department.

The skate is part of the municipality’s active-living strategy and aligns with the Municipality of Mississippi Mills 2025 Community Services Master Plan, which emphasizes inclusive, low-barrier recreation. By reallocating ice time that is often unused during school hours, the municipality is able to offer this emergency session at no cost to residents.

While regular public skating often carries a fee or requires a pass, this specific pop-up session is open to everyone for free. Mississippi Mills has run similar pop-up free skates during holidays, March Break, PD days, and on snow days to give children and families a supervised way to stay active and connected.
