Residents in Mississippi Mills are being advised to remain alert as the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority has extended a flood outlook for the Mississippi River watershed through April 21, 2026.
This advisory, which serves as an early notice rather than a warning of immediate flooding, suggests that conditions such as heavy rain, snowmelt, or ice jams could lead to high water levels, erosion, or local flooding. The update continues an initial alert issued in late March, as the region experiences a second wave of spring melting.
The conservation authority notes that while water levels and flows previously receded to near-normal levels after an early spring warming period, current weather forecasts and significant snowpack in the upper watershed warrant continued caution. Officials emphasize that this outlook is intended to help the community prepare for potential changes in water conditions based on the ongoing spring cycle.
To help protect properties, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills advises residents living in low-lying or flood-prone areas to take proactive steps. Recommended preparations include ensuring sump pumps are functional and equipped with backwater valves, having a portable generator and backup pump ready, and clearing downspouts to ensure water is directed at least 3 metres away from any structure. Residents should also secure any floating items on their property and avoid walking near riverbanks, which may be slippery or unstable.
