Residents in Mississippi Mills can find relief from this week’s hot and humid weather at four cooling centres that opened in the community on Tuesday. The municipality has opened doors at the John Levi Community Centre and Almonte Library in Almonte, and the Stewart Community Centre and Pakenham Library in Pakenham.
Environment Canada issued a heat warning for the area on June 30, 2026, with daytime temperatures forecasted between 28C and 32C. Humidity will make it feel more like 35C to 40C, and the hottest days are expected to be July 1 and July 2. The conditions are part of a widespread heat wave that has prompted heat warnings across Ontario, from Windsor to Ottawa.
“If your home is too warm, seek relief at any of the Municipality’s four cooling centres,” the municipality said in a release. The indoor sites offer air-conditioned spaces where people can cool down during the extended heat event. Residents who prefer the outdoors have free options too. The Gemmill Park splash pad is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Almonte Beach beside the Almonte Fairgrounds and Pakenham Beach at 106 Margaret Street are available to help beat the heat.
The Southeast Public Health cautions that everyone is at risk during a heat event, but health risks are greatest for infants, young children, older adults, pregnant people, those with chronic medical or mental health conditions, and people living alone or without permanent housing. Heat illnesses like heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps can develop rapidly. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that requires an immediate 911 call.
Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps encouraged people to take breaks in air conditioning or shade, drink plenty of water, and avoid caffeine and alcohol. He also stressed the importance of checking on neighbours who may be vulnerable, especially during the July 1 holiday when many people are outside at celebrations.
Anyone needing a place to get out of the heat can visit the John Levi Community Centre at 182 Bridge Street or the Almonte Library at 155 High Street in Almonte, or head to Pakenham and find the Stewart Community Centre at 112 MacFarlane Street or the library at 128 MacFarlane Street.
