Mississippi Mills, Ontario residents who are interested in running for local government or are currently serving in office can now sign up for free online workshops to prepare for the 2026 elections. The Municipality of Mississippi Mills is promoting these sessions to give community members a better understanding of the work involved in being a local representative.

The training is provided by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and covers essential topics such as how local government works, ethical standards, and how to connect with the community. Mayor Christa Lowry is encouraging residents to take part, noting that the workshops provide helpful tools for anyone thinking about putting their name on the ballot, especially those from diverse backgrounds who may be new to politics.

The program is split into two groups, with one set of sessions for people running for the first time and another for those already in office. These 90-minute virtual meetings are led by legal experts and specialists who explain the daily responsibilities of the job and how to handle the challenges of public life.

This effort to support local leaders comes well ahead of the next municipal election, which is set for October 26, 2026. Residents who decide to run for a position on council can officially submit their paperwork starting on May 1, 2026.
