Families in Morden, Manitoba, can head to Colert Beach on January 24, 2026, for a free day of ice fishing and outdoor activities at Lake Minnewasta. The event is meant to give residents a chance to try out winter fishing and enjoy the outdoors with their neighbours.

The City of Morden Recreation Department is hosting the day to teach skills such as how to drill a hole in the ice and how to bait a hook. To make it easier for people to try the sport, the city plans to offer loaner fishing rods and expects to have pre-drilled holes; attendees should confirm equipment availability with the City of Morden before the event.

People fishing at the lake commonly catch Walleye, Northern Pike, and Black Crappie. According to a 2021 PembinaValleyOnline report, ice fishing has become a very popular way to spend time at the lake during the colder months.

While the event is free to attend, visitors should still check the Manitoba Anglers’ Guide for local rules and licensing (municipal events are not automatically licence-free — the provincial Free Family Fishing Weekend is typically mid-February). Attendees should also check current ice conditions and safety notices (for example by contacting the Lake Minnewasta Beach/Campground host or the City of Morden) before heading onto the ice. The Morden Game & Fish Association has assisted with fish stocking and other conservation efforts at the lake to support local angling.
