The Summit Centre in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, has returned to its regular schedule after a temporary closure to reduce energy use during a provincial Power Warning. The facility has removed its conservation notices and swimming cancellation alerts, signaling that all normal programs and services had been restored by early February 2026 (website and booking portals were updated by Feb. 10, 2026).

The closure began on January 24, 2026, after frazil ice and extreme cold at the Bay d’Espoir hydroelectric plant put heavy pressure on the provincial electrical grid. According to Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro (NL Hydro), the Power Warning was lifted and the system has stabilized; NL Hydro said that no customer action or alerts are required at this time.

Residents can now visit the facility for regular swims, gym use, and fitness classes that were previously on hold. The City of Mount Pearl temporarily closed the Summit Centre to reduce the facility’s energy load and help prevent outages for homes in the area during the winter emergency.

Anyone who had a booking or swimming lesson cancelled during the shutdown should check their account on the Univerus Rec booking platform for updated session times and information on refunds, or contact the City of Mount Pearl recreation customer service if the portal is inaccessible.
