The SPCA St. John’s is looking for new volunteers to help run its thrift stores in Mount Pearl and St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. These shops are the organization’s largest fundraiser, providing money to pay for food, medical care and shelter for homeless cats and dogs. By helping out at the stores, residents can directly support animal rescue efforts across the Avalon Peninsula.
People who sign up will help with everyday tasks like working the cash register, helping customers find items, and sorting through donations. The organization needs helpers at the Thrift Store West located at 1062 Topsail Road in Mount Pearl and the Thrift Store East at 27 Elizabeth Avenue in St. John’s. Training and orientation are provided on-site, so volunteers do not need prior retail experience before they start.
Most volunteer shifts last between three and four hours and can be done once a week or every two weeks. The Volunteer St. John’s network notes that dependable, people-oriented volunteers are the best fit for these roles. For students, the Memorial University Student Volunteer Bureau often lists these positions for those able to commit to several months of regular service.
The SPCA says 100% of the profits/proceeds from these stores are directed to support animal rescue, sheltering and medical care at the local shelter. Interested residents can learn more about the available positions or fill out an application on the SPCA St. John’s website.
