Newmarket, Ontario — On January 22, 2026, York Regional Police will host a virtual Community Safety Data Portal Training Academy to teach residents how to navigate its public Community Safety Data Portal and access local crime and safety data.

The session is organized by the York Regional Police Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (BIDA) Unit. The free Level 1 webinar is typically offered in either a 12:00–1:00 p.m. or 7:00–8:00 p.m. slot; interested participants should register and confirm the session time through the YRP Event Calendar.

The portal includes an Interactive Crime Map, a Road Safety Map and a Crime Trend Dashboard. Data are updated nightly and include historical records dating back to 2016. Users can filter by municipality and ward to identify local crime hot spots and monitor traffic collision trends.

“This tool will improve our engagement with you, our community and improve overall community safety,” said Deputy Chief of Administration Paulo Da Silva about the portal. Chief Jim MacSween added, “Community safety is a shared responsibility. If you see something suspicious in your neighbourhood, report it to police.”

Newmarket recorded the highest crime rate in York Region in 2022 (about 6,491.5 incidents per 100,000 people), driven largely by thefts under $5,000 and assaults. In December 2025, York Regional Police issued warnings to small business owners after a series of commercial break-and-enters that targeted cash registers and cash boxes, underscoring the need for community vigilance.

By mastering the portal, neighbourhood watch groups and business owners can identify emerging trends, advocate for local safety initiatives and play an active role in keeping their streets safe.
