Residents in Niverville, Manitoba, have until March 1, 2026, to remove all personal equipment from frozen waterways and retention ponds. This annual deadline is intended to keep the water clean and ensure public safety as the spring thaw begins.

The Town of Niverville passed these rules under Bylaw No. 849-23 in February 2023. The law covers all items used for winter activities, including ice fishing shacks, skate trainers, and snowmobiles.

Local officials are encouraging people to act quickly because weather forecasts for the end of February show warmer temperatures. These conditions can make the ice unstable, which makes it harder and more dangerous to move heavy gear off the ponds.

If residents do not clear their belongings by the deadline, the Niverville Fire Department may step in to remove the items. In these cases, the owners will be responsible for the costs of the removal and may also have to pay administrative fines.

The town uses these regulations to prevent debris from sinking into the water as the ice melts. This helps maintain the local drainage systems and ensures the ponds remain functional for the rest of the year.
