Ron Evans, a candidate for Chief of the Norway House Cree Nation, proposed building a local Treatment and Healing Centre on February 19, 2026, to provide residents in Norway House, Manitoba, with better access to addiction support. The plan aims to combine traditional Cree healing practices with medical addiction programs to help families stay together during recovery.
This proposal comes just weeks before the community heads to the polls for the general election on March 10, 2026. Evans, who is a former five-term Chief, announced his plan in a campaign video after the official list of candidates was finalized on January 29, 2026.
According to the plan shared by Ron Evans, the new centre would offer a permanent home for health services that are currently provided by a temporary 32-bed safe house. The project is intended to address long waitlists for facilities in the south and respond to concerns about how the provincial health system has handled local people in crisis.
While the current leadership under Chief Larson Anderson has focused on economic growth through mining projects, Evans is making local health services a priority in his campaign. If built, the centre would allow community members to receive care close to home rather than relying on systems outside of the community.
