Anglers in Norway House, Manitoba, are reporting a successful start to the 2026 ice-fishing season after recent community reports of a seven-pound lake trout and ice measuring about 26 inches at Big Island in the Playgreen Lake / Nelson River system. Community members posted the measurements and catch reports on Jan. 9, 2026.
Twenty-six inches of clear, hard ice exceeds common ice-safety guidance for vehicles — many ice-safety charts (for example, the Lifesaving Society and other safety organizations) list roughly 12–15 inches (30–38 cm) as the guideline for a medium truck or pickup. The Province of Manitoba, however, emphasizes that ice thickness varies greatly by location and conditions and advises people to check local conditions before driving onto ice; winter-road standards for large commercial loads require substantially thicker ice.
The Canadian Encyclopedia notes Norway House is located along the Nelson River and Playgreen Lake; fishing is also described in community reporting and local sources as an important food and cultural resource for many residents of the Norway House Cree Nation. Environment Canada observations show sustained sub-zero temperatures in early January 2026, conditions that support the build-up of thick lake and river ice and help explain the reported measurements.
While many residents are focused on the fishing season, Norway House Cree Nation is also in an election cycle.. Anglers say they are travelling roughly 20–30 kilometres from the main community to reach deeper waters around Big Island to pursue larger lake trout.
