Residents in Norway House, Manitoba, can now use their mobile phones to show proof of health coverage following the provincial launch of a new digital health card. The Manitoba government released the digital option on January 12, 2026, offering a durable, accessible alternative to the paper cards residents have used for decades.

The new card is stored in a mobile application called the MB Wallet and displays the cardholder’s name, six‑digit registration number and nine‑digit Personal Health Identification Number (PHIN). It also includes a secure QR code that can be scanned by staff at clinics and hospitals to allow efficient entry of a patient’s health card details without needing the physical card.

The update is a practical tool for those visiting the Kinosew Sipi Nanatawiwekamik Health Centre of Excellence. Provincial leaders noted that having a digital version is particularly helpful during emergencies, such as wildfire evacuations, when physical documents are often lost or left behind.

To start using the service, residents must create a “My Manitoba Health Card” account on the Province of Manitoba website, download the MB Wallet app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and follow the prompts (including scanning a provided QR code) to add their digital card. Once the card is downloaded to the app, MB Wallet is designed to allow offline access, which helps people in areas with spotty cellular service. The government also notes the digital card contains only the same identification information found on the physical card and does not provide access to a person’s full medical record.
