The Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba is recruiting volunteers and officials to help host the Norway House portion (week 1) of the Manitoba Indigenous Summer Games in summer 2026. The games were originally scheduled for 2025 but were postponed to 2026 after the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports & Recreation Council (MASRC) board passed a motion on June 9 to delay the event because of the province‑wide wildfire emergency that affected many communities.
It will be the first time in 14 years the MISG are hosted within Indigenous communities (the games were last hosted in Indigenous communities in 2011). Norway House will host July 8–12, 2026, and is expected to welcome approximately 4,000 athletes, coaches and officials for the first week. Local volunteers are needed to help run events including soccer, canoeing and traditional York Boat racing, among other sports.
MASRC says the games target Indigenous youth born on or after Jan. 1, 2009. Norway House’s Parks & Recreation division is seeking people to help with security, equipment movement and managing the Athletes’ Village accommodations that will be set up in local schools.
MASRC offers coaching and officiating resources — including Aboriginal Coaching Modules — and organizers advise interested officials and volunteers to contact the Norway House Parks & Recreation office or MASRC for information about volunteering, sign-up procedures and any available training or certification. For week‑1 inquiries, contact Norway House Games Manager Edward Sonny Albert (NHCN Parks & Recreation); general MISG inquiries can be directed to MASRC.
