Environment Canada issued a dense fog advisory for Orangeville, Ontario, on February 16, 2026, warning of near-zero visibility on local roads. The advisory, which was released at 6:36 a.m., also affects Grand Valley, Shelburne, and Mansfield, along with the rest of Dufferin County.

The heavy fog coincides with Family Day, a holiday when many people are out on the roads to visit family or attend community events. Officials are warning drivers that visibility can change suddenly and suggest delaying travel that is not essential until the fog lifts.

Conditions are particularly hazardous on Highway 10, a major road that has seen several serious accidents in recent years. Because Dufferin County is located on a high table-land about 518 metres above sea level, it is often more prone to thick fog than nearby lower areas.

There is also a risk of freezing fog, which happens when moisture in the air freezes into a thin layer of ice on the pavement. This can make intersections very slippery, including the crossing at Highway 10 and County Road 17, which local leaders have previously identified as a high-risk area for drivers.

If you must drive today, experts recommend using your low-beam headlights and keeping a safe distance from the car in front of you. Drivers and pedestrians should remain cautious as the fog is expected to last for several hours before conditions improve.
