A driver in Oshawa, Ontario, had their vehicle seized and their licence suspended after being caught driving nearly double the speed limit on February 17, 2026. Officers from the Durham Regional Police Service East Division stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Harmony Road North and Winchester Road East after recording the driver travelling at 96 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometres per hour zone.
Because the driver was going more than 40 kilometres per hour over the limit, the incident was classified as stunt driving under provincial safety rules. The driver was given an immediate 30-day licence suspension and their vehicle was taken to an impound lot for 14 days. These penalties are applied on the spot before the case even goes to court.
If the driver is found guilty in court, they will face a minimum fine of $2,000 and six demerit points on their driving record. Police have been monitoring this area closely as it has changed from a rural road into a busy suburban hub with many new homes. This intersection is located near large residential projects like The Heights of Harmony.
Local authorities say the strict penalties and increased police presence are meant to discourage dangerous driving in growing neighbourhoods. Drivers are reminded that speeding in these areas carries immediate legal and financial consequences.
