On February 17, 2026, the Bluewater District School Board cancelled all school bus routes in Owen Sound, Ontario, due to heavy fog that made travel hazardous for students and drivers.
According to Environment Canada, visibility was near zero in many parts of the region during the morning hours. The agency warned that the thick fog was likely to stay in place until the afternoon, making it difficult to see on local roads.
The Student Transportation Service Consortium of Grey-Bruce, which manages busing for the area, makes the final call on service by 6:30 AM. This decision is based on reports from bus operators and road authorities who check the safety of rural roads early in the morning.
This winter has been particularly difficult for local families, with 17 days of weather-related bus cancellations already recorded by the end of January. Many of these disruptions have been caused by the frequent weather shifts that occur near the water in the Grey-Bruce region.
While the buses did not run on Tuesday, schools in the district typically remained open for students. Families had to find their own ways to get children to class safely or change their morning plans because of the poor driving conditions.
