The Grey Bruce OPP is asking drivers in the Owen Sound area to stay off the roads as heavy snow and wind created dangerous whiteout conditions in mid‑January 2026.

Grey Bruce OPP said officers responded to 38 motor vehicle collisions during the storm, with some people trapped in their vehicles for hours while waiting for tow trucks. Closures affected major commuter routes, including Highway 6, Highway 10, Highway 26, and Highway 21 (reported closed from Southampton to Grand Bend).

Local officials declared a Significant Weather Event — a notice that restoring roads to optimal conditions may take longer than usual and that only essential travel is advised — meaning plow and maintenance timelines can be extended while crews prioritize safety. Residents can check the Municipal511 map or view Grey County road cameras to see live conditions before they leave home.

Environment Canada issued snow‑squall and rainfall warnings, and local conservation authorities warned the region could see a quick thaw and rain that may lead to localized flooding as the heavy snowpack melts. Drivers are encouraged to check for updates from local outlets, including Bayshore Broadcasting, as conditions shift from snow to rain throughout the week.

For those stranded or needing a warm place to stay in Owen Sound, the Safe ‘N Sound drop‑in centre remained open during the storm to provide support. Police continue to urge the public to avoid all non‑essential travel until the squalls pass and roads are safely cleared.
