Drivers in Owen Sound, Ontario, are facing difficult travel conditions this morning after Grey County updated its road status early Monday to report Owen Sound was “mostly snow-packed” with “sections snow-covered,” and drifting was reported in an update at 12:33 a.m. EST. A later refresh of the county’s road-conditions page at 5:37 a.m. showed the Owen Sound reporting area with drifting cleared. The county warned that blowing snow can create ridges across the pavement and reduce visibility. These conditions are especially hazardous for school buses and commuters because drifting snow can hide the road surface and increase stopping distances.
Crews are working to clear roads, but strong winds across open fields are causing drifting on rural arteries and covering sections of major routes, including Highway 6, Highway 10 and Highway 21. County notes advise avoiding high-exposure county roads — notably Grey Road 1 (along the bay) and Grey Road 5 — where drifting is often worst. This weather follows a period of significant snowfall that prompted the City of Owen Sound to declare a Significant Weather Event on January 19, 2026.
Residents can stay updated via the Municipal 511 interactive map or by calling the Grey County road-conditions hotline at 1-866-266-7569. Grey County also offers road e-mail alerts for direct updates on local driving conditions. Motorists are urged to allow extra time for trips and to drive to the winter conditions.
