On January 25, 2026, officials in Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador are asking residents to cut back on electricity use to help prevent possible power outages. Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (NL Hydro) posted a province-wide Power Warning that took effect at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, citing a severe winter storm and freezing temperatures that have put extra pressure on the island grid.
If electricity demand reaches critical thresholds, the utility may implement rotating outages — controlled outages intended to protect the larger system. These rotating outages would generally last approximately 60 minutes per neighbourhood.
The Town of Paradise has activated its Emergency Operations Plan and is preparing the Double Ice Complex to be used as a warming centre if needed. Residents are being asked to conserve energy during peak hours, specifically between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and again from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Higher-elevation neighbourhoods, such as Elizabeth Park and areas near the Outer Ring Road, are among those identified as more susceptible to weather-related distribution line failures because they can be more exposed to strong winds. If your power goes out, check updates at Newfoundland Power’s outage map or report an outage by calling their emergency line at 1-800-474-5711.
Families should have an emergency kit ready with two litres of water per person per day, non-perishable food, and flashlights with spare batteries. Officials recommend using flashlights instead of candles to reduce the risk of house fires during an outage.
