Peguis Child and Family Services has announced a series of community events in Peguis, Manitoba, for June 2026. The schedule includes a Women’s Gathering on June 8, a Children’s Gathering on June 10, and a Father’s Day Family BBQ on June 11. The events support the agency’s work in community wellness and keeping families together.
The gatherings are part of the agency’s culturally grounded approach to child welfare. Peguis Child and Family Services is one of ten agencies in the Southern First Nations Network of Care. It provides services to members of Peguis First Nation whether they live on reserve or elsewhere in Canada.
Peguis First Nation made history on January 31, 2023, by becoming the first Indigenous community in Manitoba to take control of child welfare under federal legislation. Since then, the agency has prevented about 60 children from entering care and brought roughly 100 members back from external agencies. Executive Director Clemene Hornbrook has overseen this transition.
The events are part of a wider effort that focuses on cultural practices such as ceremony, language, and land-based activities. Other June events include a Prevent Abuse Session on June 1 and the 4th Annual Poker Golf Tournament Fundraiser on June 5. The agency also offers year-round programs like traditional parenting, family wellness, and medicine picking.
