Peguis Child and Family Services is offering a new workshop to help community members in Peguis, Manitoba, create or update their wills and estate plans. The agency announced the program on February 27, 2026, to give residents practical tools for making sure their families and assets are protected.
The workshop provides guidance on how to set up legal documents that handle a person-s property and belongings. Residents can also learn how to name guardians for their children to ensure they stay within the care of the community, which helps protect end-of-life decisions.
This initiative is part of the work being done under the Honouring our Children, Families and Nation Act, which became law on January 21, 2022. This law gives the community the legal authority to care for its own families and children both on and off the reserve across Canada.
Under older federal rules, the Minister of Indigenous Services Canada must often approve the wills of status Indians living on-reserve before they have legal force. By holding this local workshop, the agency aims to help members navigate these complex rules while keeping family decisions under local control.
Along with the estate planning help, the agency is also managing a settlement for the Children-s Special Allowance that was announced on February 19, 2026. Residents looking for more information on the workshop or how to register can find details on the agency-s website.
