The Peguis Health Centre in Peguis, Manitoba, has launched a new service providing emergency short‑term accommodation for patients after clinic hours and on weekends. The expanded after‑hours availability was formally implemented on February 11, 2026 (pilot weekend nursing began in late 2025), and is intended to help residents who must travel long distances for medical care.
The service gives patients a place to stay close to medical staff, which helps reduce the financial cost and physical exhaustion of same‑day travel. The accommodation is available for patients receiving medical treatment and, according to the health centre’s policy, does not apply to people who are only using the community medical van for transport.
Ogimaakaan (Chief) Dr. Stan Bird said the initiative is part of efforts to ‘‘forge a path towards a brighter, self‑sustaining future’’ for the community. Patients staying at the facility after hours will be seen by the centre’s ‘Nurse on Call.’
Peguis is located about 190 kilometres north of Winnipeg (roughly 184 km by road), meaning residents often spend several hours on the road for medical appointments; the community has previously reported that some trips can result in 5–6 hours in transit for short specialist visits. This program allows patients to rest near the health centre rather than making a lengthy return trip immediately after receiving care.
The health centre has also modernized its medical travel reimbursement process by accepting appointment confirmations and doctor’s notes via text or email as of early February 2026. These changes are part of a broader effort to make health services more efficient and accessible for community members.
