More than 650 women came together July 10 and 11 at Maamawibiway near Hodgson, Manitoba, for the annual Women’s Gathering hosted by Peguis Child and Family Services.
The two-day event brought 651 women to the 166-acre property owned by Peguis Child and Family Services for a mix of traditional culture, entertainment, and self-care. The gathering opened with a drum song and prayer, followed by welcoming remarks from the board of directors and Executive Director Clemene Hornbrook, then a presentation from Anishinaabe elder Chickadee Richard. Day two began with motivational speaker Tania Ross, who shared her personal journey of healing through Indigenous culture after spending 20 years in prison.
Local designer Allysa Sutherland, owner of Ally’s Ribbons, presented a fashion show highlighting her Japan collection. Sutherland is a Peguis First Nation member who has showcased her work at New York, Paris, and Milan fashion weeks.
Entertainment included performances by Fawn and Tia Wood, whose songs sparked a round dance among attendees, an evening set by Teri-Ann Strongarm, and a high-energy concert by Truly Tina, an international award-winning Tina Turner impersonator. Throughout both days, women connected through traditional games, vendor booths, and shared cultural experiences.
Peguis Child and Family Services operates under the Honouring our Children, Families and Nation Act. In January 2023, Peguis First Nation became the first Indigenous community in Manitoba to sign a coordination agreement transferring child welfare authority under that legislation. The Women’s Gathering reflects the agency’s work to provide culturally grounded spaces for healing and community building.
