The Peguis First Nation Public Works department is continuing work to replace culverts and repair sections of Provincial Road 224 in Peguis, Manitoba, to improve safety for local drivers. This project is part of a larger effort to fix the main road connecting the community to Fisher River Cree Nation after significant damage occurred in recent years.
According to Peguis First Nation, crews have already finished work at six different sites along the road as of March 4, 2026. The ongoing construction focuses on improving drainage to prevent future flooding and ensuring the road can handle heavy traffic throughout the year.
The Manitoba Department of Transportation and Infrastructure originally started the $18.3 million project after a severe spring breakup in 2024 left parts of the road nearly impassable. Lisa Naylor, the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, previously stated the road is the main access route for many communities and the province is committed to restoring the surface.
Provincial Road 224 is a critical link for residents traveling between Peguis First Nation and Fisher River Cree Nation but has often been damaged by seasonal floods. While the repairs will lead to long-term safety improvements, drivers should watch for potential traffic delays while crews finish the remaining reconstruction work.
