The City of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, lowered flags to half-mast at all city buildings on February 11, 2026. This move serves as an official expression of grief following a shooting in Tumbler Ridge on February 10, 2026. By lowering the flags, the city is providing a local way for residents to show support for those affected by the tragedy.

According to the RCMP, a number of people were killed during the incident, which took place at a secondary school and a private home. The victims included five students and one teacher, as well as two other individuals. The person responsible for the shooting, an 18-year-old former student, also died at the scene.

The flags at City Hall and the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre will remain lowered as the community observes a period of mourning. Mayor Nicole MacDonald described the event as heartbreaking and noted that the city stands in solidarity with its neighbours in northern British Columbia. Local residents have started using these city sites as places to leave flowers and messages of sympathy.

This gesture is a standard way for communities across the province to honour victims of major tragedies. While Tumbler Ridge is located over 1,000 kilometres away, the city is taking this step to show that the entire province is united against such violence. The official mourning period helps neighbours come together to mark the loss of life and support those who are grieving.
