The Town of Ponoka, Alberta, is hosting advanced swimming and lifesaving courses this winter at the Ponoka Aquaplex to help residents build water safety skills and train for future jobs. The program includes certifications for Bronze Medallion, CPR-C, and Bronze Cross — important steps on the lifeguard training pathway.
The first course, Bronze Medallion and CPR-C, runs from January 16 to January 18, 2026, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. This training teaches the basic principles of water rescue and resuscitation. Participants must be at least 13 years old or have completed the Bronze Star level to sign up for this session.
A second course for the Bronze Cross certification will take place in February 2026. This training is held on February 6 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., followed by full days on February 7 and February 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bronze Cross teaches more advanced rescue techniques and is widely considered the transition from basic lifesaving to professional lifeguarding.
These courses follow the standards set by the Lifesaving Society. Note that, to pursue the Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard certification, candidates must hold Bronze Cross and a Standard First Aid certificate (which includes CPR), and meet the minimum age requirement for National Lifeguard.
By offering these classes locally, the town is working to create a local pool of trained staff to fill lifeguard positions at the community pool.
Residents can sign up through the registration portal or visit the front desk at the Ponoka Aquaplex. For more information about the classes or requirements, community members can also call the facility directly at 403-783-0131.
