The Town of Ponoka’s annual Christmas tree pick-up will begin on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, with crews making one pass down every back alley to collect natural, compostable trees. Residents without alley access may place trees at the front curb no later than Monday, January 20, 2025. The program helps keep organic waste out of landfills and supports the town’s composting efforts.

To prepare trees for collection, residents must remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments and metal stands. Only real (natural) trees will be picked up; artificial or heavily decorated trees will not be collected. This one-pass system keeps operations efficient and helps ensure neighbourhoods are serviced in a single sweep.

Trees may also be dropped off free of charge at the Ponoka Waste Transfer Station (4205 AB-2A) during winter hours (Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Residents should confirm any limits on quantities and follow posted instructions or ask Waste Transfer Station staff for unloading directions.

The town’s commitment to sustainability was recently recognized when the Waste Transfer Station earned the 2024 Collection Site Award of Excellence from the Alberta Recycling Management Authority. By turning Christmas trees into compost, Ponoka continues to support local environmental initiatives and reduce regional landfill waste.
