Residents in Port Alberni, British Columbia, can now sign up for introductory sessions to learn the basics of rock climbing. Bomber Boulders Climbing Centre announced the beginner-friendly program on January 15, 2026, and opened registration to help people get active indoors during the winter months.

The sessions focus on bouldering, a type of climbing performed on shorter walls without ropes or harnesses. Safety is maintained with thick padded mats on the floor, and the gym offers climbing-shoe rentals for those who do not have their own gear.

Co-owners Kayla Rentz and Deon Towle, along with co-owner Alec Phillips (identified in local reporting), opened the facility in early 2024 to fill a gap in local recreation options. In an interview with the Alberni Valley News, Phillips said he wanted to bring indoor climbing to the community so residents would no longer have to travel to other cities to practice the sport.

The gym’s name pays tribute to the local Martin Mars water bombers that were long-time fixtures at Sproat Lake. Bomber Boulders and local tourism listings describe the space as a community hub where neighbours can meet and improve their fitness together.

Interested residents can sign up for the sessions through the gym’s website or by visiting the location in person. These classes are part of a broader effort to promote local activities, similar to the city’s Play in PA initiative.
