The City of Port Alberni, British Columbia, is looking for new workers to help manage the community’s drinking water and sewage systems. On February 19, 2026, the city posted job openings for a Water System Operator and a Waste Water System Operator to ensure local infrastructure remains reliable for every household.

Interested residents have until March 20, 2026, to apply for these positions through the Alberni Valley Employment Centre. These front-line roles are responsible for daily maintenance and repairs, which helps prevent service interruptions and keeps the city’s utilities running smoothly.

The hiring comes as the city works on a $37.9 million upgrade to its wastewater treatment plant and manages the recovery from the 2025 Mount Underwood wildfire. Last August, the City of Port Alberni had to put Stage 3 water restrictions in place to save water after the fire grew to over 3,600 hectares.

Along with the treatment plant upgrades, the city also finished work on the Burde Street water and storm drain project in early 2025. Adding new staff will help the municipality manage these updated systems and respond faster to any future issues caused by extreme weather or aging equipment.
