A heat warning is in effect for Port Colborne and much of the Niagara region as another stretch of extreme temperatures settles over the area, the second such event in less than two weeks.
Environment Canada issued the warning at 12:23 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2026, for a heat event that could last until Wednesday or Thursday evening. Temperatures are forecast to climb to between 30 and 37 C on Tuesday, with some areas potentially reaching nearly 37 C. Humidex values are expected to range from 38 to 45 through the week.
As of 3 p.m. Monday, the temperature at the nearby Welland-Pelham station was 28.2 C with a humidex of 31, but conditions are expected to intensify. The UV index is very high at 9 on both Monday and Tuesday, so anyone spending time outdoors should cover up and wear sunscreen.
Environment Canada issues heat warnings for Niagara when daytime highs hit 31 C or more and nighttime lows stay above 20 C for at least two days in a row, with humidex values of 40 or higher. Local public health officials say extreme heat can affect anyone, with infants, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses being especially vulnerable.
The hot and humid air could also worsen air quality, with the Air Quality Health Index possibly approaching the high-risk category. Residents looking for relief can find cooling centres at municipal buildings in Port Colborne, including libraries and community centres.
A change in the weather is expected by mid-week as a 30 to 40 per cent chance of showers moves in Wednesday, lingering through Saturday. Temperatures are projected to drop from around 32 C on Wednesday to 27 C by the weekend.
