Port Colborne, Ontario’s 48th annual Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival is returning from July 31 to August 3, 2026, backed by a record 80-plus sponsors and an expected 65,000 visitors. The four-day celebration along the Welland Canal and downtown waterfront has grown from humble roots into the city’s signature summer event.
Leading the sponsor support is GIO Rail, a Niagara-based railway service provider serving as the festival’s presenting sponsor through a four-year partnership that includes a $75,000 annual investment. Organizers say the high sponsorship level marks the most support in festival history. More than 150 volunteers and 150 vendors are also part of the effort, alongside 15 community organizations.
The festival began in 1979 as a gathering of 400 people at the local museum, marking the 150th anniversary of the first Welland Canal. Now it draws visitors from across Ontario and Western New York. Attractions include live music, tall ships, and family activities. Last year’s event drew 65,000 unique visitors, and similar numbers are expected this year.
After crowd-control issues at a 2024 Billy Talent concert led to 15 minor injuries and a halt to alcohol sales, organizers boosted security measures in 2025. The changes worked, with city staff noting significant strides and no major incidents. The 2025 festival still ran a $100,000 deficit on $942,000 in expenses, and this year’s budget includes a taxpayer contribution of $180,700. Council also earmarked $100,000 for attractions and emergency preparedness.
The festival footprint will transform West Street and the canal corridor, with local businesses bracing for their busiest weekend of the year. As Stephanie Powell-Baswick, Director of Museum & Culture at the Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum, says, the museum remains the festival’s thematic and spiritual anchor.
