On March 13, 2026, Alberta NDP MLA Heather Sweet raised questions in the provincial legislature regarding the ongoing expansion of the Prince Rupert Port Authority in British Columbia, as part of an effort to improve shipping links for prairie products.

Sweet, the opposition critic for Agriculture and Rural Economic Development, asked for updates on funding and coordination between the port and industrial zones in Alberta. She requested progress reports on studies regarding shipping routes and port access that link the two regions.

The Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association has identified the port as a vital asset for the growth of local industries. The association, a partnership of municipalities and businesses, aims to ensure a reliable route for moving petrochemicals and agricultural products to international buyers.

In 2024, the Alberta government provided a $250,000 grant to the port authority to coordinate the Industrial Heartland to British Columbia Economic Corridor Forum. This effort was part of a multi-year plan to address rail system bottlenecks and improve the movement of goods from the Edmonton area to the coast.

The goal of the current push is to create a more seamless shipping network between the two provinces. By increasing capacity at the port in northern British Columbia, officials hope to provide more opportunities for Canadian products to reach global markets.
