The Canadian Armed Forces are conducting a major winter training exercise in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, that will bring more troops and aircraft to the area until March 13, 2026. This annual event involves military members and local Canadian Rangers practicing their skills in the Arctic environment.

According to Nunavut Emergency Management, the training includes long-range patrols on snow vehicles and live-fire artillery practice in specific controlled areas. Specialized teams are also performing under-ice diving operations in the waters offshore.

While Joint Task Force (North) has set up a temporary headquarters in Cambridge Bay, a heavy military presence is expected in several communities including Arviat, Whale Cove, and Chesterfield Inlet. Residents might notice more noise from large planes and increased traffic near the airport and training zones.

Officials say these activities are routine and are meant to help the military respond to emergencies and disasters in the north. The increased activity could affect local travel and outdoor plans during the exercise period.
