Indigenous youth in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, can now apply for a fully funded flight training program that covers the costs of becoming a commercial pilot. The Atik Mason Indigenous Pilot Pathway is accepting applications for its 2026 training cycle; the application deadline is January 19, 2026.
The initiative is led by Exchange Income Corporation (EIC) in partnership with Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO). The program pays for flight training fees and living expenses — covering Private and Commercial Pilot licences and multi‑engine/IFR ratings — addressing the more-than-$100,000 cost that typically prevents students from becoming pilots.
Training for the Rankin Inlet intake takes place at a dedicated local base, allowing students to remain closer to family and culture while they learn. The program lists a Rankin Inlet base on its official website and has been promoted locally.
Graduates are guaranteed pilot positions with EIC-owned regional airlines, including Calm Air, Keewatin Air, Perimeter Aviation and Canadian North. The expansion is part of an effort to build a local aviation workforce for the Kivalliq region and honours Timothy Atik ‘Tik’ Mason — an Indigenous pilot from St. Theresa Point whose story inspired the Pathway.
