The Matchbox Gallery in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, updated its website on February 27, 2026, to give local artists more visibility through new personal pages. This change makes it easier for people around the world to find and buy the community’s unique hand-made pottery and artwork.
These new pages feature the stories and work of long-time makers like Philip Ugjuk, who has been active at the gallery since at least 2011, as well as founders Jim and Sue Shirley. The website now includes direct links to permanent art collections and groups of items that are currently for sale to international buyers.
Founded in 1987, the gallery helped restart the local tradition of making ceramic art in 1990. Rankin Inlet is currently the only place in the world known for producing this specific style of Inuit pottery art.
The gallery also operates the Kangirqlinik Center for Arts and Learning, which provides training and job opportunities for people in the community. These website updates are intended to help local artists reach more galleries and collectors outside of the region.
