The Government of Nunavut is looking for a new building official in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, to help manage safety checks and construction permits across the region. This hiring effort, announced on February 20, 2026, aims to fix long delays in the building process and support the community’s growing housing needs.
The position offers a starting salary between $109,850 and $124,672, according to the job details on Northern Jobs. Employees in this role also receive a northern allowance of up to $18,517 to help with the cost of living in the North.
The new hire will join the Department of Community Services to tackle a significant backlog in property inspections. A report from the Auditor General previously found that inspections were an average of six years behind schedule, which can lead to unsafe conditions if not addressed.
This role is a key part of the territory’s plan to build 3,000 new homes by the year 2030 through the Nunavut Housing Corporation. Having a local official in Rankin Inlet will make it easier for home builders to get their work approved quickly and safely as the community expands.
The government is also moving toward a one-stop shop for services to make it simpler for residents to get help. This new hire will work directly in the community to ensure building codes are followed and permits are processed without the need for inspectors to fly in from other locations.
