The Nunavut Department of Health is asking parents in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, to make sure their children are up to date on routine vaccines following a public notice on February 18, 2026. Health officials say these shots are the best way to protect children from serious illnesses like measles, whooping cough, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
The reminder comes just days after a spike in breathing-related illnesses was reported on February 16 in the community of Kugaaruk. Staying current with immunizations helps prevent local outbreaks that can lead to school closures or the need for emergency medical flights to hospitals outside the territory.
Dr. Ekua Agyemang, who has served in the role since 2024, was officially named as Nunavut’s Chief Public Health Officer on February 17, 2026. Under this leadership, the health department continues to focus on keeping community immunity levels high to avoid the spread of diseases that have seen global increases in recent years.
Families in the community can check their vaccination records or book an appointment by calling the Rankin Inlet Health Centre at 867-645-8300. Residents can also contact the local Public Health office at 867-645-8070 to ensure their children have all the necessary shots to stay healthy and keep local programs running safely.
