A new public washroom facility officially opened its doors at the Sorensen Station Transit Terminal in downtown Red Deer on April 14, 2026. The facility aims to improve accessibility and service for residents visiting the city’s main transit hub.
The washrooms are available to the public seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. To ensure the space remains clean, safe, and welcoming, a dedicated attendant will be on-site during all operating hours. Beyond maintenance, the attendant will provide basic assistance to users, including wayfinding and connections to community supports when appropriate.
This initiative is a pilot project delivered through a partnership between the City of Red Deer and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Central Alberta. The project seeks to create a respectful and accessible environment for all transit users and downtown visitors.
The permanent facility follows years of testing, as the city previously operated seasonal public washroom pilot projects from 2021 to 2024. In February 2025, City Council approved borrowing $450,000 to renovate the Sorensen Station space. The motion to bring the project into the capital and operating spending plan was initiated by Councillor Dianne Wyntjes and seconded by then-Councillor Vesna Higham.
