The Town of Redcliff is putting a stop to motorized vehicles on all community pathways and trails. Starting July 8, 2026, ATVs, dirt bikes, and off-highway vehicles are no longer allowed on the trail network under the town’s Park, Recreational or Public Areas Bylaw.
Town officials said the rule was put in place for safety after reports of motorized vehicles on the trails. “For the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, families, and pets, motorized vehicles are prohibited on all Town of Redcliff pathways and trails under the Town’s Park, Recreational or Public Areas Bylaw, unless specifically authorized by permit,” reads a public notice from the Town dated July 8.
The ban specifically includes the mountain bike trails the town maintains with the 670 Mountain Bike Club, a local non-profit known as the 670 Collective. The club manages about 60 kilometres of trails between Redcliff and Elkwater and also runs a bike skills park here.
Any motorized vehicle is off-limits unless the operator has a permit. People who use ATVs or dirt bikes are being told to find other legal areas to ride.
The town also reminded trail users of Alberta’s helmet rules. Anyone on a motorized vehicle must wear a helmet. Kids under 18 need a helmet for any bike or cycle, powered or not.
These changes come as the town looks at updating other rules for shared pathways. At their June 22, 2026 meeting, Redcliff council discussed proposed updates to Traffic Bylaw No. 1993/2025 that would introduce new definitions for e-bikes, e-scooters, and off-highway vehicles and set clearer rules for motorized devices on trails and public property.
