Redcliff is in for a scorching week, with Environment Canada forecasting temperatures climbing well above seasonal norms and peaking near 35°C by the end of the week. The heat wave is expected to bring several days of mid-30s highs, prompting reminders for residents to take care and stay cool.
The forecast for Monday, July 20, starts with a high of 26°C, but the mercury will rise quickly. Thursday, July 23, is expected to reach 35°C, followed by a sizzling 36°C on Friday, July 24. Saturday, July 25, will stay hot at 35°C. These temperatures are eight to nine degrees above the usual late-July high of 27°C.
Along with the heat, the UV index is rated very high, hitting 8 on Monday and 9 on Tuesday. The Environment Canada forecast also shows a humidex of 32 on Tuesday, making it feel even hotter. A chance of showers and thunderstorms exists on Monday, but sunny skies are expected to dominate the rest of the week.
This latest hot spell comes after heat warnings were already in effect for southeast Alberta earlier in July. According to Environment Canada, overnight lows during such events often provide little relief, which can be especially hard on vulnerable people.
Alberta Health Services recommends drinking plenty of water, staying in air-conditioned spaces when possible, and checking on neighbours who may be at higher risk. Older adults, young children, and those with certain health conditions are more susceptible to heat illness. Residents are also urged to wear sunscreen, hats, and light clothing when outdoors.
Redcliff, a town of about 5,600 people near Medicine Hat, sits in one of the province’s hottest regions. Scientists note that heat events are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change, a trend expected to continue. While this week won’t challenge the all-time Medicine Hat record of 42.2°C set in 1886, it still calls for caution and common sense under the sun.
