The RM of Sherwood has lifted its fire ban as of June 1, 2026, ending a six-day prohibition on burning that took effect when fire danger hit extreme levels. The ban was issued May 26 after the municipality fell into the Extreme Zone on the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency’s daily fire danger map.
During the ban, no controlled burn notices were approved and all existing burn permits were voided. The RM’s policy is to automatically implement a fire ban whenever the fire danger map places the area in the High or Extreme zones.
The local ban came three days before the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency issued a province-wide fire ban on May 29 at noon, covering much of central and southern Saskatchewan due to extreme fire risk. That order prohibited open fires, controlled burns, and fireworks. As of May 29, there were six active wildfires in the province, including the uncontained Lobstick Fire near Duck Lake, which had burned 13,000 hectares.
While the ban is now lifted, the RM reminds residents that fire safety precautions remain important during dry conditions. Residents can check current restrictions through the SPSA’s interactive fire ban map.
Saskatchewan is coming off a record-breaking 2025 wildfire season that saw more than 500 fires burn nearly three million hectares and forced thousands of evacuations. The 2026 season has already seen 74 wildfires as of late May.
