Premier Scott Moe delivered a keynote address in Regina, Saskatchewan, this week, following his party’s majority victory in the February 9 provincial election. Speaking to the local business community, Moe focused on protecting the province’s energy and agriculture industries from federal government regulations, emphasizing the need for provincial control over natural resources to drive economic growth and job stability.

During his remarks, the Premier highlighted Saskatchewan’s status as a “carbon tax free” province. This follows the 2025 removal of the provincial industrial carbon levy and a meeting in late January 2026 between Moe and Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa, where they discussed trade policies and energy sector collaboration.

The Premier’s focus on economic autonomy comes despite recent data from Statistics Canada showing that Saskatchewan added 6,100 jobs in January 2026, one of the strongest provincial performances in the country. However, the Saskatchewan NDP has criticized the government’s record, claiming that specific sectors remain under pressure. Moe argued that “unconsulted” federal policies have limited the growth of the energy sector and “capped” the province’s wealth creation potential.

Moving forward, the provincial government plans to prioritize jurisdiction over critical sectors like potash and uranium to bolster global energy and food security. Moe stated that removing federal regulatory hurdles is essential to reaching the province’s full economic potential and will guide upcoming municipal and provincial development planning.
