The North Salt Spring Waterworks District has announced the results of its 2026 board election, with residents selecting two trustees to help oversee the water utility that serves over 5,500 people on Salt Spring Island.
Incumbent trustee Steve Lam was re-elected to the board with 293 votes, while Philippe Erdmer was elected as a new trustee with 267 votes. Challenger Jon Scott received 150 votes from the 387 ratepayers who cast ballots. The results were shared following the annual general meeting held on May 6, 2026.
The newly formed board for 2026 includes Chair Brian Pyper, David Courtney, Philippe Erdmer, Sandra Ungerson, and Steve Lam. This group succeeds outgoing trustee Elizabeth FitzZaland, who was thanked for her three years of service. Trustees serve staggered three-year terms to manage the district’s operations and budget.
The new board takes office as the district advances significant infrastructure projects. Work is currently underway on the Maxwell Lake water treatment plant, a project with a total construction cost of $16.6 million. The district is also seeking $6.7 million in federal funding under the Build Communities Strong Fund to support this plant and upgrades to the Crofton pump station.
During the annual meeting, a motion was also passed to increase monthly pay for board members by $25. Regular board members will now receive $425 per month, while the chair will receive $475 per month.
